Celebrate National Daiquiri Day!
Enjoy a glass of this popular rum-based cocktail, not to be confused with the Mojito (includes muddled mint). Many believe it was originated in the Caribbean around 1898 by a host who mixed together rum, sugar, ice and lemons (or limes depending on who tells the story). Some say it was created at a local bar, others say at a social gathering. Named Daiquiri after a nearby town, this cocktail quickly became popular. Some say that a bartender in Florida created the frozen version (same ingredients blended with ice) in the 1920s. There are many versions, some with additional fruit, available online. Whether chilled, on the rocks, frozen, alcohol, or no alcohol enjoy!
Basic Daiquiri ingredients:
1 to 2 parts White Rum
1 part Lime or Lemon Juice
½ part Sugar or Simple Syrup (sweeten to your taste)
Slice of Lime or Lemon for Garnish
Ice
Add rum, juice, and sugar (or simple syrup) to shaker. Mix well to dissolve sugar (skip this step if using a simple syrup). Add ice to shaker and shake. Strain into glasses. Chilled glasses would be ideal.
Non Alcoholic Daiquiri ingredients:
1 to 2 parts Sparkling Lime or Lemon Water
1 part Lime or Lemon Juice
½ part Sugar (sweeten to your taste)
Slice of Lime or Lemon for Garnish
Ice
Add sparkling water, juice, and sugar to shaker. Mix well to dissolve. Add ice to shaker and shake. Strain into glasses.
Simple Syrup ingredient:
1 parts water
1 or 2 parts Sugar (1 to 1 for light, 1 to 2 heavier, sweeter)
Add sugar to water. Set range temperature to medium. Stir to dissolve. Once sugar is dissolved remove from heat and allow to cool. If using cups, should make about 1 and ¼ cups of syrup.
Please enjoy responsibly.
