As a kid Easter baskets, egg coloring, and egg hunting were a family tradition. I often wondered what bunnies and colored eggs had to do with getting dressed up for service. Then there was Easter dinner, usually brisket was the star. Great memories.
Oftentimes holidays are mixed with religious observances. With this in mind, when my kid asked this very same question, I was prepared.
“Bunnies are a symbol of life.” Their fertile nature well known, left this part out to avoid the perplexed look of a young child.
“Eggs were also a symbol of life.”
“It’s Spring and that brings new life with flowers and plants.”
“All of these remind us of a man that made a great sacrifice for all people.” Lost her there, but she happily went off with her Easter basket.
Whether you observe Easter or Resurrection Day or both, all celebrate life. Not to oversimplify, but let’s remember to celebrate life whenever we can.
