Hydration is key, especially during the warmer seasons. Overexposure to heat increases the risk for heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke.
Here are a few tips to help improve hydration:
Drink water. I know that’s obvious, but here are a few things to consider:
Start your day hydrating
Have a cup or glass first thing in the morning. This will help repalce any fliuds lost overnight, especially during a hot summer night. Somethimes, I have a warm cup of water with lemon or lime and a bit of honey.
Room temperature water is better
Maybe it is counter intuitive to drink room temperature water on a hot day, but it’s better for hydration. With ice cold or cold water our body has to take the time the bring the water to a temperature it can absorb. This causes a delay in hydration.
Carry your water with you
To hydrate throughout the day, grab your water bottle and go. Not only is this a reminder to hydrate, it’s pretty handy to have your water near you. There are so many options to choose from, have fun picking out a reusable water bottle.
Add a little flavor
Ok, so maybe you don’t like the taste of plain water. Here’s your chance to add a bit of flavor to your water. Try some lemon, lime, grapefruit, my recent personal favorite a squeeze of clementine juice. Most citrus fruits will work. Why not try cucumber or watermelon slices or even fresh mint. Have fun “refreshing” your water.
There is an app for that
Hydration apps will help you track your water intake and set reminders for you.
So remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
