Every third Friday of December people wear Holiday-themed pullovers, button down sweaters and more recently sweater dresses to celebrate the unofficial holiday known as National Ugly Sweater Day. In Britain, these Holiday-themed sweaters are known as jumpers. Since it started in 2011, National Ugly Sweater Day is celebrated every year and its hashtag continues to trend on social media.
The first of these themed pullovers started making television appearances in the 1950s, while not as over the top as today’s sweaters, they were called “Jingle Bell Sweaters”. Became a bit more popular in the 1980s. One of my favorite actor/comedian’s wore a snowflake patterned sweater in a popular 1989 Christmas movie. The trend slowed a little in the 1990s. Then in the 2000s, showing off your ugly sweater became an annually tradition. There are several movies and television shows throughout the 2000s where you can get a glimpse of an ugly sweater. You can purchase one almost anywhere, there are dozens of diy ideas available online.
Whether you were given, purchased or diy one yourself these Holiday-themed sweaters are sure to provide some holiday fun.
