Detox

Detox?

People often rave about detox methods like spa treatments, soups, teas, smoothies, flavored waters, and other options I would rather not even think about.  Personally, I’m not certain if they work or not.

What is detox anyway? Originally, it was a hospital (or rehab) procedure that rid the body of dangerous levels of drugs, alcohol, or poisons.  Today detox plans, diets or recipes are usually diy processes focused on removing toxins that seem to cause a variety health issues from exhaustion to insomnia to depression.  Detox products like supplements appear to be sold everywhere, and I’m always curious about the cost.  Also, wondering what effect these products would have on our own detox systems like the respiratory and immune systems, our intestines, liver and kidneys (which usually eliminate and filter out most ingested toxins).  A lot to consider.  Hmmm.

For now I’m going to stick to keeping hydrated, snacking on my favorite mix of dried fruit, nuts and seeds with dark chocolate, eating more vegetables and fruits, trying different whole grains (curious about quinoa), watching my protein and getting more rest.  Definitely more rest.  And exercise, a brisk walk or a no one’s watching dance session to my favorite 90s songs would work.

Although I have been reading up the health benefits of certain vegetables like cabbage, think I’ll try a cabbage soup.  Would be nice to find another soup recipe.

Whatever you choose this holiday season, I do believe that moderation is key.
