Stuffing or Dressing?

Any holiday dinner is sure to include this traditional side dish.

Years ago, while visiting family in the Southern states I remember hearing a relative call it dressing. Friends that have moved to Georgia and the Carolinas have started calling it dressing. Some people in PA Dutch Country call it filling. My family call it stuffing. Whether my Grandmother actually stuffed the turkey with it or she made it as a side dish, it was known as stuffing. Guess it all depends on where you live.  But does the name really matter? Whether it’s made with bread, breadcrumbs, cornbread, potatoes, or rice and mixed with meat, seafood, fruit, or vegetables this side dish completes any holiday dinner table.

Stuffing or Dressing?

Here’s my quick and easy recipe:

Stuffing/Dressing
4-5 Cups stale or toasted bread pieces (or stuffing mix)
1 Small onion, chopped
2-3 Celery stalks, chopped
2 Apples, diced (granny smith or gala)
½ Tablespoon dried thyme
½ Cup unsalted stock or broth
2 Eggs
½ Teaspoon Salt
Pepper (optional)
2 Tablespoons butter
3 Tablespoons olive oil

Preheat your oven to 375- 350. Sauté chopped celery and onions in olive oil until tender. Then sauté diced apples for about 3 to 4 minutes on medium- low. Combine toasted bread (or stuffing mix, ok sometimes I take the shortcut), onions, celery, diced apples, and thyme. Mix eggs in a separate bowl with salt and pepper (optional). Add stock/broth and eggs. Mix well. Pour into lightly buttered baking dish and bake for about 35 to 40 minutes. Serves about 5 to 6. Enjoy!
