First day of Summer 2024 is June 20th, the solstice is the beginning of Summer here in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun traveling on a northern path appears to stand still, and then it switches direction. This gives us the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Sun starts to rise around eight hours before noon and then sets around eight hours after noon.
“Solstice” is based on the Latin solstitium, meaning “sun stopped” and sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
