As the summer days wind down and the school bells start ringing, parents everywhere experience a mix of excitement and anxiety. Whether you have little ones heading off to preschool or teenagers we have some tips that will make this transition smoother for both you and your kids.
Let’s Get Organized
Set aside some time create a checklist of what your kids will need, from backpacks to lunchboxes. Let them help pick out their required supplies. Maybe include a fun binder or cool gel pens. This not only makes the shopping trip more memorable but also helps your kids feel involved.
Swap out and adjust closets.
Replace summer clothes with seasonal school clothes and use storage bins and label holders to get clothing and accessories in order for an easy morning routine.
Designate a homework/study space.
Select a space for homework and studying. Organize necessary school supplies in storage bins or baskets. Be sure to label every bin and basket. Also, color code them for each child.
Calendars and chore charts.
Use dry-erase calendars and charts (weekly is ideal) to keep track of family events, chores, school events and trips, school projects, after-school activities, playdates, and other special events your kiddos have with friends like birthday parties.
Get your weekly lunch and dinner meal plans started.
With after-school activities and helping with homework, you will certainly be short on time to cook dinner during the school week. If you plan, shop and prep for your meals over the weekend, it can help Monday through Friday meals feel less stressful. Also, consider using food storage containers for easy access to your proteins, starches, vegetables, and more.
Re-stock your first-aid kit.
Accidents are unavoidable. Be sure you re-stock your first-aid kit as soon as possible. Band-aids, antibiotic ointment, and alcohol wipes are essential. You can distract them from their boo-boos and ouchies with kid styled band-aids.
Start a sleep routine.
Summer can wreak havoc on sleep schedules, and kids might be used to a more relaxed bedtime. Gradually shift their bedtime forward a week or two before school starts to help them adjust. Make it a relaxing routine! Try reading a chapter of a new book together or play soft music to signal wind-down time.
Set that alarm.
Avoid being late on the on the first day by getting into the habit of setting your alarm clock. Try using timers and set them at multiple minute intervals for your little ones that drag their feet.
Post key info where your family can see it.
Having key info digitally is great, but having this info posted IRL is essential. Be sure to post a listing of important phone numbers (ie: local police department, fire department, your job number, family member phone numbers, etc), addresses, directions for getting places, and other key info.
Have a great, less stressed school year.
Embrace the new.
Back to school can be an emotional time. Embrace the changes, and have open conversations about any feelings your kids might have. Let them know that it’s normal if they feel a bit nervous and that you’re there to support them through this new school year.
