Easy Back to School Sleep Tips.
Before we dive into the tips, let’s talk about why sleep is important for students of all ages! Quality sleep helps with memory, and focus essential for makin learning easier and more enjoyable!
1. Regular Adjustments
If your kids have been staying up late all summer, don’t switch overnight. Regularly adjust their bedtime by about 15 minutes increasing to about 30 minutes each night at least 1 to 2 weeks before the first day of school.
2. Create a Nighttime Custom
Make bedtime a relaxing experience! Whether it’s reading a favorite bedtime story, or chatting about the day’s adventures, these calming activities signal to your child that it’s time to wind down.
3. Limit that Screen Time
Reduce screen exposure by at least 45 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Remember blue light from devices can mess with their melatonin production—and nobody wants cranky kids in the morning! Encourage relaxing activities like drawing, reading (yes more reading, get them use to it again), or listening to soothing music.
4. Cozy Sleep Space
Create a sleep environment! Keep the sleep environment dark, cool, and quiet. Think bout using blackout curtains, nightlights (if you don’t use already), or even fun glow-in-the-dark stars to create a night sky in their room (my family favorite).
5. Consistency is Key
Try to keep sleep times consistent, even on weekends! This helps regulate their internal clock and makes it easier to get up for school.
6. No Caffeine and Sugary Snacks
Avoid caffeine and sugary snacks in the evening, as they can keep kids energy levels too high for settling down. Instead, try small snacks with protein and complex carbs to promote better sleep!
7. Stay Active
Encourage your kids to be active during the day! Physical activity can help them feel sleepier at night. Try to make sure they finish any vigorous activities at least an hour to two before bedtime.
8. Get the Kids Involved
Have a little fun with the process! Let your kids pick out their favorite sheets, blankets, pillows, or pajamas. When they feel involved, they are more likely to accept the changes!
With these tips, you can help make sure that your kids are well-rested and ready to learn, explore, and thrive. So, gather the family, chat about the school year ahead, and set everyone up for success with a healthy sleep routine!
